About Hegel
The story begins in 1988. Bent Holter - student at the Technical University in Trondheim (NTNU) decided to do a thesis under the original design of the amplifier transistor that would cure the problems of classical systems. Enemy number one - harmonic distortion. Holter somehow could not accept the fact that when we give a simple signal to the amplifier, you will get that signal plus something else - distortion produced by electronics. Fighting distortion usually meant the deterioration of other parameters, including damping factor. Holter decided to break out the classic schemes and developed a project that became the basis of what we know today as SoundEngine Technology. And where the name of the company came from? Well, after hours Bent played in a rock-metal band called The Hegel Band. When they needed amplifiers for concerts, Holter suggested building them himself. His ideas took on real shape, but it took lots of money to refine the technology. Help came from Telenor - one of the biggest players in the telecommunications industry.

The early nineties were a period of prosperity for the brand. First they ensured the patented solution known today as SoundEngine, later developed a DAC (1994) and the first CD Player (1996). Over the next eight years the company has steadily improved the product range and generated more and more profits from year to year. When the financial crisis came, most companies immediately took a defensive strategy which meant cutting costs. Norwegian designer played differently. He hired new engineers to design devices. Some time later, brand new D/A converters were born.

Today Hegel is one of the best established brands in Hi-Fi market, producing integrated, pre and power amplifiers as well as CD players and some of the most modern and sophisticated C/A converters. The SoundEngine Technology was just a start. Today there are six more original technical solutions in Hegel's portfolio. The company has dealers in 32 countries and its products are sold all over the world. Awards and press reviews speak for themselves.

H80
In the H80 integrated amplifier with digital and analog inputs, technology from the Reference Hegel products has virtually been pouring down. Hegel's patented SoundEngine output stages, the Reference quality preamp and our critically acclaimed DACs. All in one box. A Music Machine! The H80 features 5 digital inputs with 24 bit technology, 1 true balanced analog input and 2 unbalanced analog inputs (one of of which can be configured to be a Home Theatre direct input). The USB input even allows you to use the supplied remote control to maneuver within play lists on your computer. Skip / Play / Pause the songs. And not only that, it is all plug & play. The DAC inside the H80 is based on Hegel's stand-alone DACs, which have been recognized by critics as some of the best in the industry. Much thanks to Hegel's proprietary re-clocking technique and the unique way we implement the digital components. The result of which is less additives to the music. You only hear what you are supposed to, and that makes the sound so much more life-like.

The analog stage is equally as impressive. The pre amplifier comes directly from one of our Reference standalone pre amplifiers. The design bases itself on components brought in from far beyond the regular audio industry, and the benefit is very low noise. This means that all the finer details are preserved, and you can virtually "feel" the room the artist is performing in. In many ways, we could define the sound as "the sum of all things that aren't there". But then there are all the things that actually are there. Brought there by our patented SoundEngine technology. This not only reduces distortion, but it also dramatically increase something called damping factor. This is a description of bass control, and gives the H80 a level of punch, driving power and dynamics that is completely unheard of in this price range. This combination of versatility and quality of sound is what gives it the name Music Machine.

H360

Hegel H360 is a giant among integrated amplifiers. With 250 watts per channel into 8 ohms and a damping factor of more than 4000, it will control virtually any loudspeaker on the market. Thanks to the patented SoundEngine technology, this beast of an amplifier combines power, dynamics, finesse and musicality like no other integrated amp on the market. The connectivity is more of a bonus... There are balanced and unbalanced analog inputs. There is a Home Theatre bypass. There are optical and coaxial digital inputs, as well as a USB input for any signal up to DSD128... And, yes - it is also a streamer. Need we say more?

The core of everything Hegel is sound quality, and the H360 is no exception. The obvious benefit of the H360 is easy to see - power. It can deliver 2 x 250 watts per channel into 8 Ohms, and is stable even in lower impedances. Furthermore, the damping factor of more than 4000 makes certain it can take control over even the most demanding loudspeakers. The H360 will always play with great authority and ease.

Rarely is such power combined with finesse. However, specially designed power supplies driving precision volume attenuators contributes to an extremely low noise floor. Hand matching near perfect transistor pairs in the input stage reduces harmonic distortion. Our patented SoundEngine technology reduces over all distortion, and especially cross-over distortion. Our designers understand how transistors work, down to the atomic level, and have used all this knowledge in designing the H360.

The H360 incorporates a high quality DAC, using Hegel’s proprietary re-clocking. The benefit of this is that we can make everyday sources sound really good. Sources like a phone or a computer. This is why we have also included functionality like Apple AirPlay and DLNA streaming. There is also a reference class USB input, supporting all formats including native DSD64 and DSD128.

H160
The H160 amplifier has one purpose, and one purpose only - to allow you to connect whatever device you want and make it sound as good as it possibly can. First of all, we designed an integrated amplifier with a broader set of connections than any other amplifier on the market, in this category. There is a wide variety of connections, varying from classic balanced and unbalanced analog connections, to Home Theatre integration and onwards to various digital inputs. You can also stream wireless music to it from devices with Apple AirPlay or DLNA. Secondly, we realized that not all the devices you choose to connect are designed to be high-end music performers. This meant we had to develop a range of unique technologies and implementations to make certain that your phone, tablet or CD-player could reach its fullest potential. The H160 incorporates technology that "repairs" some of the damaged caused by a low quality source.

Finally, we integrated the new with the classic, and included our award-winning and worldwide patent holding amplifier technology, the SoundEngine. This amplifier design completely turns ordinary amplifier designs upside down. The result is a purer and smoother sound with low distortion, as well as ultra dynamic bass due to a high damping factor. And yes, you can also use your headphones, and it uses up to 60% less power than an ordinary amplifier. So, what are you standing there thinking about?

H300
The flagship integrated amplifier/DAC. The alchemists of old devoted their lives to finding a way to make gold out of stone. As far as we know they never succeeded. However, with the H300, we finally feel that we have. At least, from an audio perspective. On one side, the H300 is a spectacular integrated amplifier. With its 250 watts per channel, it is powerful enough to pair with even the most demanding loudspeakers on the market. Hegel's patented SoundEngine technology ensures completely undistorted and natural sound with a dynamic and powerful bass response. The H300 is, to a large extent, based on Hegel's Reference products rather than its smaller brothers. On the other side, it has 5 digital inputs and this is where the alchemy comes in. Hegel's digital inputs are designed with unique technology that can make your computer, streamer or other digital device sound extremely good. You can take some of the most affordable digital music players on the market, connect them to the H300's digital inputs, and get musical and dynamic sound.

The secret lies in how we receive, treat and re-build these digital signals in the H300's built-in DAC. The digital side of the H300 is also future-proof as you can upgrade it using our "DAC-loop". Our claim is that aside from a good pair of loudspeakers, the H300 may be the only "audiophile" component you need in your system. On the technical side, the H300 uses the hand-matched FET transistors, normally only seen in Hegel's most esoteric power amplifiers. This dramatically reduces, or even eliminates, higher-order harmonic distortion, resulting in more resolution and a smoother sound. It normally requires about 100 transistors to find one perfect pair.

The biggest step forward is the preamplifier stage. The high quality dual-mono construction borrows several ideas from our top of the line pre amplifier. This ensures the lowest possible noise and distortion levels. The H300 uses what we call the Hegel 2 amplifier platform. This platform ensure very good channel separation and low noise levels. Still, all sections in the H300 are designed ground up specifically for this unit and is far superior to any other integrated amplifier from Hegel. The H300 has a wide range of both analog and digital inputs. It has a fixed-level Home Theater input that allows you to integrate it in a Home Theater system. If you are using advanced remote control systems, you can also control it directly through the direct IR inputs on the back panel.

P20
The P20 is our entry level preamplifier and offers an affordable door into the Hegel Reference line of products. Designing the P20 was not a task we took lightly. Many of the ideas and concepts were taken from its bigger brother. Although scaled down, many of the good characteristics remain: the enormous soundstage, the deep rhythmic bass response, the perfect timing... In short, the sense of being there with the performers. The P20 comes with a high quality system remote control, milled out of one solid piece of aluminium. It has the same bead blasted and anodized surface finish as the preamplifier itself. You can really feel the quality each part of the P20; not only hear it. There is a total of 5 regular inputs. Both balanced and unbalanced. In addition, a special Home Theatre input allows integration in Home Theatre systems. Finally, there are both balanced and unbalanced outputs as well as a fixed line-level output.

The idea behind the P20 was, as mentioned, to offer a more affordable entry into our line of separates. But most of all, it was to set a new standard of price and performance in preamplifiers. Something we think we have achieved. The preamplifier is perhaps the most delicate unit in a sound system. Because the signal levels are so low, even the tiniest levels of noise or distortion smear the image and mask the small details that enliven the music. In designing the P20, we achieved the highest quality of sound at such a low price point by using brand new technologies, such as Silicon Germanium transistors. In addition we implemented high frequency components that were not originally designed for audio, and use them in ways that had never been done before. The result is an open and natural sounding preamplifier at a very competitive price.

P30
The P30 is the best preamplifier ever developed by Hegel. With its patented technology and hand matched components, the P30 is a confident contender in the race towards being the best pre amplifier in the world. Regardless of price. Despite of what many hifi enthusiasts believe, pre amplifiers are actually one of the most difficult audio components to develop. At the same time it is one of the most important components in a well sounding system. The reason is that the signal strength is very low when entering the pre amplifier, and is therefore very susceptible high frequency noise and distortion elements. The most critical phase in the pre amplifier is the volume regulation, and in the P30 this is a master piece in it self. The physical volume control knob is only used to describe the desired volume output level to the array of Gigahertz MOS-transistors. These direct the music signal through a network of high quality resistors that reduce the signal level.

After the volume control circuit the signal is directed through the amplification circuit. For the first time ever we are using the patented SoundEngine technology in the pre amplifier. Combined with Hegel's use of hand matched FET transistors, this results in unsurpassed levels of musical distortion and noise. In total, the music signal will only pass through 2 transistors and between 1 to 3 resistors on its way through the P30. The sound you hear from the P30 can only be described as organic and very natural. To quote a journalist: "The Hegel sounds so much more natural than my previous reference. And it does so without flashing itself with gold and diamonds".

The Hegel P30 has 2 pairs of balanced inputs (XLR) and 3 regular unbalanced (RCA). In addition to this it has a Home Theatre input that allow you to integrate it in a Home Theatre system. The P30 also has a 3,5 mm IR-direct input and a 12V trigger output connector. The Hegel P30 is available in both silver and black finish, so it can be matched with both the H30 and H20 power amplifiers.

Power
H20
The Hegel H20 incorporates the latest version of the Hegel FET-technology. A practical benefit of the H20 FET-technology is a more rhythmic sound. It is simply better at re-creating a bass line. Another vital element is the removal of harmonic echoes in the higher frequencies, which result in a lot more detail and still a smoother and more natural sound. The core design of the H20 is based on the H30 reference amplifier, with the best possible implementation of our patented and laser trimmed SoundEngine modules. Also designed in the timeless Hegel look, it will fit in any modern or classic home. Just one single button on the front and a solid bead blasted and anodized front panel. A truly rigid design with well over 1,5 kg of aluminium in the front panel alone.

New too the H20 is bead blasted and anodized top and side covers. This adds to the exclusive look, and the overall design is more consistent. The Hegel H20 is a remarkable power amplifier with power capabilities of more than 130 Ampere. Extremely low distortion levels. Amongst the highest damping factor in the industry, and full control of the loudspeakers. All this to give you the most natural, rhytmic and dynamic sound on the market today.

H4SE
The H4SE is an improved version of the H4A MK2. The H4A MK2 was in many ways the very corner stone of the Hegel amplifier range, but the development of the H20 amplifiers disclosed a significant potential for upgrade. The H4SE has received many of the technologies developed for the H20, including the Hegel Next-Gen technology in the input stages. This gives it a smoother, yet at the same time more rhythmic sound compared to its predecessors. Each channel of the H4SE is divided into completely separate voltage gain and current gain stages. The benefit with this design is a higher dynamic range, better pin-pointing of instruments and a wider sound field. The reduction of dynamic distortion all over the audible frequency range together with complete elimination of "transistor sound" makes the H4SE sound smooth and transparent without losing any details. Behind it's confident front panel, the H4SE has extreme power reserves and is capable of powering all known speaker systems. The H4SE can deliver a current output signal of more than 200A.

The H4SE is a dual-mono construction, using Hegel's patented technology in the amplification stages. The H4SE output stages has integrated audio stages and power supplies to be able to deliver an exceptional large dynamic range. The H4SE uses the laser trimmed Hegel SoundEngine amplifier modules in the audio circuits. The power amplifier is very dynamic and will drive the speakers with a deep powerful bass and a very high resolution smooth midrange with a detailed soundstage. The H4SE can be connected to both balanced and unbalanced pre amplifiers, and can be used with both XLR and RCA connectors. The speaker outputs has got two pairs of heavy duty high quality gold plated terminals for both channels.

H30
With a power rating of more than 1,1 kW in 8 ohms it is on the verge of being easier to measure the H30 in horsepower. The massive H30 mono power amplifiers from Hegel play any loudspeaker in the world with ease and authority. The H30 is our best power amplifier ever, and is definitely a combatant for being the best power amplifier in the world. The H30 is developed as a mono block, but there is also the possibility to use it as a stereo power amplifier to start with if you are on a budget. Progress is a one way street and so for our power amplifiers. The H30 is using a new and improved version of the patented Hegel SoundEngine amplifier technology. This further reduce all types of distortion. In addition to the improve SoundEngine we are also using the highest possible level of the Hegel FET-technology in the input stage and the voltage gain stage. This technology reduce a very specific type of distortion called Harmonic Distortion. This particular type of distortion causes what many people call "transistor sound", and this is therefore dramatically reduced in the H30. It will simply let the music reach you in a different way than what you have ever experienced before.

Normally, when you compare a less powerful amplifier with a more powerful amplifier, the most powerful will have a more potent bass, more attack and more "SLAM" than the less powerful one. This is how it works up to a certain point. The Hegel H30 is beyond this point, and all of a sudden the differences become different. The H30 will simply play with a completely undisputed control, regardless of the loudspeakers. The bass is tremendously deep, but not dominating. The level of detail in the high frequencies are unheard of, but never overbearing. Usually a demo of the H30 and P30 combination ends with clapping hands and a whispering wooooow...

So what sets the H30 apart from the H4SE? There are several technical differences. As a mono power amplifier, the H30 has a fully balanced output stage which reduces distortion and cancel out distortion. Further more, the H30 has a much more advanced input stage and voltage gain stage. Both the H4SE and the H30 uses hand matched transistors, but only the H30 uses the special combination of JFET and MOS-FET transistors. This further reduces higher order harmonic distortion in the H30. The third big difference between the two is H30's output transistors. These are of higher quality, with less distortion, than the ones in the H4SE. In addition to this, the use of dual transformers in the H30, reduces mechanical noise. The higher budget also allow the use of better parts throughout the H30.

Super
Hear what your headphones actually sounds like, with the new Hegel headphone amplifier. Milled out of one solid piece of brushed aluminum, it is a beautiful piece on its own, but the real beauty lies in the sound. Simply connect the SUPER to your computer, connect your headphones to the SUPER and let Hegel's Reference amplifier technology give you an instant sound upgrade. A much richer sound, far deeper and better bass response and more gain. Why is this so? The answer is complex, but there are two major obstacles to getting the optimal sound from your headphones. The SUPER addresses both.

The first reason you should have a look at the Hegel SUPER has to do with noise. No modern computers are actually designed to sound good. They are designed for speed and versatility, and create a lot of background noise. Not so much that it is audible in itself, but enough to blur the finer details of the music - making everything sound a bit dull and flat. The Hegel SUPER uses proprietary technology, designed in-house by Hegel, that dramatically reduces the noise – allowing you to hear everything there is to hear.

Secondly, the different headphones on the market have very diverse impedances and are notoriously difficult tasks for an amplifier. The result is that a normal headphone amplifier will act as an equalizer and sound significantly different, depending on which headphone you connect. Hegel's Reference amplifier technology ensures that the SUPER plays with exactly the same sound signature on all headphones: No sound signature at all. This is why we say that when your headphones are more than just a gem to you – you should try the SUPER

HD12
Introducing the next generation of Hegel D/A-Converters - The HD12, introduces a combination of great new functionality as well as greatly improved sound quality. First of all, a brand new USB interface allows you to use all common sampling frequencies up to 24 bit / 192 kHz. Also, this new interface allows playback of native DSD-files (PC only), without conversion to PCM. Furthermore, the HD12 has equal quality on the 2 optical and 1 coaxial inputs. Versatility - With an HD12 you can upgrade virtually any system to Hegel standards. There is a very high quality headphone output, regular RCA phono outputs as well as true balanced XLR outputs. This means you can connect to any receiver/amplifier and/or subwoofer. However, the built-in and remote-controlled volume attenuator also allows direct connection to a pair of active loudspeakers or to a power amplifer. High End to the people.

Sound - New research in the digital domain has resulted in extremely low jitter levels. In particular, great improvements have been made to "skirting", a distortion that reduces the timing and precision in the sound. You hear it very well in drums and dynamic elements of the music. Another large improvement comes in the analog part of the D/A-Converter. We are talking about a noise floor of -145dB. It means the HD12 brings out so much more of those tiny details that suck you in to the music. Quite simply a significant upgrade and a remarkable D/A-Converter.

HD25
The HD25 is the natural digital hub in any audio system. It has four digital inputs and two analog outputs. The digital inputs can be used to connect a tablet, computer, streamer, Sonos, cable TV or music center to your existing audio system. And with greatly improved sound quality. The HD25 has a built in pre amplifier and a remote control which allow easy integration with active loudspeaker systems or headphone amplifiers. Should you lose your remote control, you may switch inputs by simply tapping on the front panel. If you plan to use it together with a computer as a source, the HD25 is especially clever. Out of the box it is very simple Plug & Play. Connect the USB cable and immediately enjoy high quality sound.

On the technical side, the HD25 borrows a lot of technology from the Hegel Reference products. One of these is the use of silicon germanium transistors. These components add extremely low levels of noise, resulting in unsurpassed levels of resolution and a more natural and pleasant sound. You can also switch between two different digital filters to adjust the sound to your taste. All inputs are impedance matched to minimize distortion due to the quality of the digital cables. In addition, all inputs are galvanically isolated.

OPTIONAL: If you want to explore super high resolution material (24/192) on USB, the HD25 supports this too. You simply flip a switch on the rear panel and install our high resolution driver. All other inputs supports this resolution without any extra drivers.

CDP2A MK2
The entry level Hegel CD-player is fully based upon the core design of our reference CDP4A, mainting many of the qualities of its bigger brother. CDP2A MK2 has a high quality CD-Drive mechanism is designed in house by Hegel. This is the same drive as the one you can find in the CDP4A. No other CD player in this price range can match Hegel CDP2A MK2 when it comes to reproduce the analog music experience that is recorded on a CD. On its advanced surface mounted audio circuit board, the player has multilevel 24-bit 192kHz converters for a true balanced signal conversion, in addition to Hegel's proprietary analog stages. The CDP2A MK2 is also using the Hegel master clock circuit with an extremely low jitter level.

The left control button does, in addition to being the On/Off button, allow you to navigate between the different tracks on the CD. The right button opens and closes the CD tray, as well as starting and stopping the playback. It is ultimately easy to operate, and fits beautifully with the other Hegel system components. CDP2A MK2 has both digital and analog outputs for different types of connectors. The digital output is perfect for use with an external DA-converter like the Hegel HD10.

CDP2A MK2 can be used with any type of music system, but to fully take advantage of Hegel's revolutionary music reproduction, we recommend that you use our CDP2A MK2 in combination with Hegel amplifiers and preamplifiers. The CDP2A was awarded "Best Buy" by Hi-Fi Choice magazine. The CDP2A was also awarded CD-player of the Year 2006-2007 by Norwegian magazine "Lyd & Bilde" and CD-player of the Year 2006-2007 by Swedish magazine "Bild och Ljud".

CDP4A
High-End Reference CD player. What is lost can never be recovered... This is why the music source is of such big importance. If signals are lost in the reading process it can never be repaired by a good amplifier or a loudspeaker. The process of reading a CD seems quite simple at first, but it requires very precise timing and the weak signal can very easily be distorted. If you get these factors under control you are well on your way to a natural and dynamic sounding system. A system that brings you closer to the performers. The CDP4A is all that. Thanks to the Hegel CD-Drive mechanism with redesigned servo motors and perfectly synchronized timing throughout the digital domain.

We are proud to say that we are one of the very few manufacturers on the market with capability of designing a CD-Player on this level from the ground up. The benefits for you are obvious; a fully integrated design in more durable, and it sounds better. Hegel CDP4A has a digital output that can be used to connect it to a separate D/A-converter, like the HD10. Both our CD-Players are controlled by only two buttons on the front panel, or via the supplied system remote control unit. The 2-button design and our nicely curved front panel even gave us the Norwegian Design Councils "Award for design excellence". It looks good. It sounds natural. It's truly Scandinavian.

The difference between the CDP4A and CDP2A: The CDP4A is using a more advanced audio board than the CDP2A. It has more precise components and a more complex power supply. The CDP4A is using the new and more precise Hegel master clock 2 with an extremely low jitter level. Altogether the CDP4A will have a larger dynamic range, a lower colouration and better analogue outputs than the CDP2A.

RC2
With a minimum of buttons in an intuitive layout, our RC2 remote control unit completes the exquisite Hegel music listening experience. Unlike the normal remotes made largely of plastic, the sleek RC2 is made out of a 17-mm thick aluminium bar and will control all the different Hegel units including integrated amplifiers, pre amplifiers and CD players. 12 buttons is absolutely enough to operate their functions. The RC2 is included in the package with most Hegel components starting with the H100 integrated amplifier and CDP2A MK2 CD player. It was designed to perfectly match the front panels of Hegel amplifiers and sources, as well as giving you a pleasure to operate the system from the distance. Silver and black versions are available to suit your Hegel components.
